Organization Chart of the School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences is structured according to the regulations of the Act on Higher Education of the Land of Baden-Württemberg (sections 22-26 LHG) as follows:

Schools are the basic elements of organization at the university. They consist of one or more (related) departments and are more than mere administrative units. The members of the School are all students, university teachers, scientific staff, administrative staff and student assistants connected to the School.

The School Board is a decision-making body on School level and consists of the Dean, the Dean of Studies and Vice Dean, seven representatives of the professors, three representatives of the academic staff, one representative of other staff members as well as five student body representatives. According to the Act in Higher Education of the Land of Baden-Württemberg, the School Board decides on all general matters concerning the School. It also states its position on appointment suggestions. Furthermore, its approval is needed for structural and development plans, the formation, modification and suspension of School institutions as well as the development and modification of study and examination regulations.

The Dean’s Office is the interface between the School, the administration and the President’s Office. The School Board is responsible for the School’s management and administration. It consists of the Dean (who is elected by the School Council) and two Vice Deans, one of them holds the office of the Dean of Studies. All three persons are elected by the full professors based at the School. The School Board is supported in its work by seven full-time employees (School Council).

Prof. Dr. Michael Diehl was appointed the first full-time Dean of the School of Social Sciences on April 1, 2012. The Dean represents the School and is the chairman of both the School Board and the School Council. His deputies are the Vice Deans Prof. Dr. Dagmar Stahlberg and Prof. Dr. Jan van Deth. Dean of Study is Prof. Dr. Thomas Gautschi. He is responsible for all questions regarding teaching and studying at the School. According to section 24 subsection 2 of the Act on Higher Education of the Land of Baden-Württemberg the Dean has to ensure that all professors and other staff in duty of teaching perform their teaching and examination tasks according to the rules and that all members, scientific institutions and other institutions of the School are able to perform their duties. He is entitled to make use of regulatory law and has decisional authority that ensures in particular the implementation of the recommendations suggested by the Committee of Student Affairs and adopted by the School Council.
